The discontinuous dynamics of the metropolitan spatialization produces new processes of territorial consolidation. The resultant space presents itself as an amorphous juxtaposed piece collection, without connecting ones with the others. Here the articulation of a proximity to the following one is not defined and can happen in an infinity of ways. It happens by accumulation, independently of all metric. This space is a patchwork of remnants, heterogeneous, in continuous variation.

The urban drawing that it delineates seems to operate by folding. Each situation makes possible a fold, the rearticulation with the contiguous, allowing to reach vast dimensions, to pass from place to space. They allow to fill the interval between the small and the immense, to give account of great scales. Local situations that take an extended field through its prolongation and propagation.

This is about the model of the topology: to portray the neighborhood and its proximities without appealing to the measure of the distances. It uses the intervals, the routes, the bonds, the prolongations, all elements without measure. Not the places themselves, but the relations, of proximity and removal. These relations extend, from close to close, to the distant dimension. Diverse situations in an extensive space, as the juxtaposed concentrical circles created when we shoot several rocks in the water. Like the sonorous or luminous signals that propagate from one point to the open environment. Spreading out by means of waves.

The connections between the places do not happen anymore in a space continuum. The relations between the different points in the discontinuous and limitless space of the metropolises happen by articulations between the next and the distant, interfaces between what is not contiguous, ignoring the measures of distance proper to the continuous space. A territorial disposal produced by distinct and irreducible locations. Another type of operation of passage, of connection between the sites.

Not the places as such, defined and delimited, but relations of proximity and removal. Diverse situations in an extensive space, a network formed by prolongation and propagation. Instead the rigid implantation of the traditional city, the metropolitan space is a soft collection of juxtaposed parts without connection between themselves. A field that can be traced independently of all metric, of all largeness, consisting of intervals and movements. Not by landmarks settled in the space. The territory is before anything the critical distance between two situations: the force relations, of attraction and repulsion, that are established between them.
