The Laboratório de Linguagens Sonoras, LLS (Sonic Languages Laboratory)at the Graduate Program in Communication and Semiotics of the Catholic Universityof São Paulo (PUC-SP) is the result of an integrated research projectentitled "Technologic Development and New Sound Grammars." Itwas created in 1993 with funding from FAPESP. Since it does not have anyconnection with a music department, the LLS hosts projects coming from quitedifferent areas, such as sound poetry, oral culture studies, multimedia, and music composition. Thus, it stimulates the exchange among differentfields and allows the development of research and artistic production.

The LLS is part of an ambitious project of interconnection among sound, verbal, and visual languages which is in course at the Graduate Programof Communication and Semiotics at PUC-SP. As part of this project, the Programhas also created the Verbal Languages Laboratory and the Visual LanguagesLaboratory, which are working with the LLS on a cooperative basis.
